She thought it would be easy after she got into the car, got about a hundred miles between herself and New York. It didn’t get easy. Even with Damon beside her. She was giving up everything, everything she’s known, everything she’s loved. But New York has long since transformed from being her home to being her cage, gilded or not. And she knew that leaving was the right solution. Everything back there has been tainted, poisoned. She needed to escape. But still, the restlessness in her heart refused to go away.
Damon noticed her unease and pulled over into a motel. It wasn’t the usual luxurious accommodations she is accustomed to, but it was the best thing they could find so far out of town. That logic didn’t help to make her feel any better. The cottons sheets rubbed her the wrong way and scratched at her skin. Her jitters worsening as she struggled to feel comfortable despite the lumpiness of the pillow and the springs of the thin mattress poking her back.
After twisting and turning around for what seemed like hours, Damon got up from his bed and curled besides her, pulling her towards his chest.
“Are you okay?”
“No,” she admits, her voice barely a whisper. “I’m not. I thought I would be, but I’m not. Everything is different, and I’m scared and I… I don’t know if I can do this.”
He’s silent for a moment, taking in her words, before speaking.
“If you want… I’ll take you back first thing in the morning. You just say the word and I’ll turn the car around.”
“No,” she responds sharply. “Going back isn’t an option. I am committed to this. I just… I don’t know where to go from here.”
She lets out a long breath, her heart hammering away in her chest.
“Tell me, Damon. How is all of this suppose to end?”
Damon pulls her closer to him, holds her for just a moment before answering.
“Simple, we’ll live happily ever after.”
And he smiles, nuzzling his head against hers. And even though his response totally cliche, a completely fairytale ending, and has no solid foundation whatsoever to stand on… she feels her heart easing, the knot in her stomach untwisting. She breathes in his scent, snuggles just a bit closer to him. Suddenly the cotton sheets don’t feel so scratchy, the pillows not so lumpy, and she can hardly feel the springs in the mattress anymore. And lying there, besides Damon, she finally finds that feeling of contentment, of rightness, that has eluded her since she left New York.
He places a soft kiss against her forehead, chaste and sweet, and she feels her eyes closing. His words echoes in her dreams.

Love, she thought with disgust, recalling Loki’s taunt. How she hated that term. That word, the one that is thrown around so casually, often times used to describe one’s affections towards a car or a pet, was not appropriate at all. It is too simple a term to describe all that she feels towards Clint Barton. What she felt for the archer went beyond that. Beyond such a shallow four lettered word.
She owed him a debt. Something that she will never be able to repay. He’s the only one to know just how she was unmade. This is because he was the one that put her together again. Pulled her from the depths of a spiraling darkness and, as cliche as it was, give her new purpose. So to deem what she felt towards him as simply love would be to devalue everything he’s done for her.
It is that very debt she owes him that makes her push herself off of the floor, kick that bow out of hands and smash his head roughly against the metal railing. It was debt that made her fight to survive. She had to live after all in order to repay it. Playground rules. He saved her, she saves him. That’s how debts worked.

Klaus/Caroline/Stefan AU - Mourning Klaus’s Death

Stefan didn’t have to say a word, Caroline already knew the answer from the look in his eyes.

The truth hung between them, heavy with it’s crushing truth, laden with unspoken sorrow. They had loved him, even when they shouldn’t. And now he was gone, they didn’t quite know what to do with themselves. And she felt the moth winged flutters of something akin to panic, hysteria, and overwhelming sorrow flit in the pit of her stomach. Stefan catches before her knees hit the ground.

They stayed there in the clearing for a long while, sobbing together, mourning his death.

“Just remember what I taught you, Katniss, and you’ll survive. Now tell me again, what are the rules?”
